Shikaodori, which is danced throughout the prefecture, can be roughly divided into two types based on the dance style: Taikoodori (in the southern part of the prefecture) and Makuodori (in the northern part of the prefecture). The Taiko dance type dancers carry a 1 to 3 meter long Sasara bamboo on their backs, hang a drum on their bellies, dance while beating the drum, and are characterized by their large deer masks. In the maku-odori type, the curtain is lowered in both hands, accompanied by flutes and drums, and except for the Tono deer dance, the deer masks are small. The origin of the Taiko drum dance originates from the Shinto rituals of Kasuga Taisha Shrine in Nara, and is said to have been transformed into a dance for an event to pray for peace in the village and drive away evil spirits, and the costumes we see today are thought to date back to the Edo period.
