Ironware in Mizusawa, Oshu City is said to have its origins in the late Heian period, when foundry craftsmen were invited from Ezu (Shiga Prefecture) to make agricultural tools and daily necessities such as hoes and spades.

Since the Meiji era, Nanbu ironware has received high praise overseas, and in 1975, Nanbu ironware was designated as the first traditional craft in Japan.
