A naval officer and politician from Morioka City. After graduating from the Naval War College, he was appointed as a second lieutenant in the Navy, and continued to advance through the ranks, becoming Minister of the Navy in 1932, and opposed the Triple Alliance advocated by the Army. He was appointed as the 37th Prime Minister in 1945 and received the hopes of those who wanted peace, but he resigned en masse six months later due to opposition from the army. At the end of World War II, he returned to the position of Minister of the Navy and contributed to the end of the war and the post-war process, and always worked towards the pursuit and realization of peace. There is a Mitsumasa Yonai Memorial Room in the Morioka City Ancestor Memorial Hall, where items related to him are displayed.
