It is a village located in the northeastern part of Iwate Prefecture, at the eastern foot of the Kitakami Mountains, facing the Pacific Ocean (Noda Bay). The terrain is generally mountainous and has many ups and downs, but the valley floor of the Ube River in the northeastern part of the village and the plateau near Nei in the center have less ups and downs. The branch ridge of the Kitakami Mountains runs north-south through the village. In addition, since ancient times, salt has been made by boiling seawater, and the salt has been loaded on the backs of oxen and transported to inland areas.
The center of the village was devastated by the massive tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and 38 precious lives were lost.
