It is held near Meiji Bridge on the Kitakami River, and is an Okuri-Bon event in which a boat decorated with lanterns and Bon offerings is set on fire and floated down the river to send off the spirits of the ancestors and pray for good health. It began about 240 years ago when the daughter of Yukinobu, the lord of the Nanbu domain, held a large memorial service with water lanterns.Afterwards, to comfort the spirit of a prostitute who drowned in the Kitakami River, a memorial tablet and offerings were floated on a boat. Since then, it has become a popular event among the people of the town. An intangible folk cultural property designated by Morioka City.
