Morioka Autumn Festival

Morioka City

Central Iwate

This festival of Morioka Chinju began in the 6th year of the Hoei era (1709), when the 23 castle towns of the Nanbu domain were completed, each with a capital of 200,000 koku, and one festival float was brought out from each town to celebrate. The floats are decorated with figures of heroes and many artificial flowers, and the keyaki wheels shaped like Genji floats make a squeaking sound. Young people are attached to each platform, and they parade around the city while playing drums and playing the unique Southern style music. Designated as an intangible folk cultural property by Morioka City.
