Mt. Kurikoma, the main peak of Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, is also called Mt. Sugawa in Iwate Prefecture, and is the main peak of Kurikoma Quasi-National Park at an altitude of 1,627 meters. Climbing courses lead from Iwate, Akita, and Miyagi prefectures, and the Iwate side climbs from the Sugawa Onsen trailhead. You can enjoy climbing through the remaining snow on the third Sunday in May, the beautiful alpine plants from June to July, and the fall foliage from the end of September until the mountain closes in November. There are no difficult spots on the climbing course, so even middle-aged and elderly people can climb with confidence. It takes about 2 hours from the Sugawa Onsen trailhead to the top.
