Nagaoka Somin Festival in Oraga Village

Kanegasaki Town

Southern Iwate

The Nagaoka Somin Festival in Oraga Village began in 1989 to pray for recovery from the torrential rain disaster that hit Kanegasaki in 1988. Men in lower belts parade in the bitter cold with energetic shouts. It is a festival to pray for good health and a bountiful harvest for the coming year, and the festival is filled with excitement, with spectators along the road splashing water on them and competing for Sominbukuro, which are rolled out with steam rising from their bodies.
