Osako Andon Festival

Hanamaki City

Southern Iwate

August 14th and 16th every year

This festival is said to have started about 200 years ago to mourn those who starved to death during the Great Tenmei Famine. The andon, which is about 5 meters tall, was made by painting shoji paper with wax. Four floats, including ones depicting warriors, are brought out by each group, illuminating the night sky of the town, which is crowded with people returning home. It has been designated as an intangible folk cultural property by Hanamaki City.
