Jodogahama got its name during the Tenpo era (1681-1683), when Reikyo, the seventh priest of Miyakosan Joan-ji Temple, admired that it was ``just like the Pure Land of Paradise.'' In 1996, it was selected as one of Japan's 100 best beaches, in 2000 as one of Japan's 88 best bathing beaches, and in 2001 as one of Japan's 100 best scented beaches. Jodogahama Beach, located in a cove, boasts first-class scenery as a tourist destination, but the good water quality and calm waves make it a first-class beach as well.
