It is located at the southernmost tip of Towada-Hachimantai National Park and straddles both Akita and Iwate prefectures. The mountain's name comes from the legend that a horse can be seen appearing on the mountainside during the lingering snow in early summer. It is a treasure trove of diverse volcanic topography and hundreds of species of alpine plants, including dicentra.
