bottle don

Miyako’s new local gourmet bottle don

[What is Bindon? ]

I’m sure many of you have seen raw sea urchin in jars at markets in the Iwate Sanriku region, and “bin-don” was born from this bottle of sea urchin.
A new Miyako local gourmet dish that is colorful and unique in appearance, packed with Sanriku seafood and other specialty ingredients. The style is to pour the contents of the bottle over the rice yourself, so you can pour it a little at a time or pour it all over, and enjoy the arrangement.
The menu items are carefully crafted by each restaurant in Miyako City, so please enjoy the flavors of each restaurant.

Ajidokoro Kaishu

This time I visited “Ajidokoro Kaishu”. We offer two types of jar don, one made with seafood and one made with vegetables.
“Shirayuki,” which is mainly made with seafood such as salmon roe, cod, and mekabu, and “Honolulu,” which combines colorful vegetables such as avocado, okra, and tomato with minced shorthorn beef. The unique feature of both is that they are made with grated yam that has been made with dashi. Not only does it look beautiful with its white color, but it also goes down easily and is easy to eat even when you don’t have an appetite.

②Mr. Yamane, the lovely young proprietress with a smile, says, “I want you to enjoy your meal.”

③ “Shirayuki”, which mainly features seafood *The bowl is an example of the arrangement. In reality, you will be provided with a bowl of rice and a jar with ingredients.

④Hana Ruru (Honolulu), which is mainly made with vegetables *The bowl is an example of the arrangement. In reality, you will be provided with a bowl of rice and a jar with ingredients.

⑤It’s exciting to open the bottle!

On March 23, 2019, the Miyako City Fish and Vegetable Market opened to the public, with a wide array of locally produced seafood, processed marine products, agricultural products, etc., and many shoppers from not only the local area but also from outside the prefecture visit in search of fresh seasonal ingredients. It will reopen on the day. The sales floor will be completely renovated, and there will also be a new space where you can grill and eat seafood purchased at the market on the spot. On the day of the reopening, there will be a ribbon cutting and red and white daifuku giveaways, and on March 24, 2019, there will be events such as tuna butchering.

Rikuchu Yamada Station

The station building of Rikuchu Yamada Station, which was heavily damaged in the earthquake, was renovated in time for the opening of the Rias Line. The windmill is designed after the symbol of Yamada Town, “Holland Island”.
* Oshima, an uninhabited island in Yamada Bay, is called Oranda Island because a Dutch ship that lost ship once washed ashore here.

Yamada Tourism and Products Center

A temporary commercial facility opened in 2013 that includes a tourist information center, specialty product sales, a seafood grill corner, and a bakery. In particular, the grilled seafood corner is popular not only with locals but also with people from outside the prefecture. You can select fresh shellfish and other seafood from the specialty product sales corner, steam or grill them on the table and bench space in the center of the store, and enjoy them on the spot. In addition to oysters, scallops, cucumbers, sea squirts, and more, you can also find local seafood that is not widely available. On the day I visited, there were shellfish shaped like scallops called akasaragai. It is said to have a richer flavor than scallops. Some products can be sold in units of as little as 1, so the system is easy to use even for a small number of people.

① Select the ingredients here.

② Steam the shellfish in a rented pot. ③ It’s steamed!

④ Serve the scallops grilled.

In addition, the popular shop “Yamadawan Bakery”, which has been open since “Tott” opened, is a bakery that is so popular with locals that it sells out in the afternoon. We are particular about ingredients such as flour and yeast, and offer a wide variety of breads, including basic breads and French breads, as well as limited-time breads made with seasonal ingredients, and side dish breads that make use of Yamada’s seafood. At lunchtime, we also offer sandwiches and drink sets.
We also offer bread and pizza making experiences (reservations required), and this time we tried making pizza.

Reconstruction town walking snack tour

This is a 90-minute walking tour that starts at Rikuchu-Yamada Station and includes an earthquake storyteller who will guide you through the recovery efforts in various parts of the town, as well as sample food unique to Yamada.
First, participants were given tablets so that they could view photos from before the earthquake and the current situation while listening to the explanation.

①Start from Rikuchu Yamada Station

Our first stop was about a five-minute walk toward the sea from Rikuchu-Yamada Station, in front of a building that survived the tsunami but survived the collapse. The outer wall has been repaired and is still in use, so you can see the height of the tsunami because the color of the destroyed wall is different.
It seems that the tsunami reached the dark-colored parts of the building’s exterior walls, and was about 7 to 8 meters high. From there, we walked for about 5 minutes to Mt. Ogurayama, which is about 10m above sea level and offers a panoramic view of the sea and town. The large clock that was installed at Rikuchu Yamada Station, which was damaged by the tsunami, is on display there. It still points to 3:27, the time when the tsunami arrived. Nearby, there is an explanation board with photos of the station before and after the earthquake, which shows the extent of the damage. In addition to the Bell of Requiem and Hope located on the same site overlooking the sea of Yamada and the changing town, a cenotaph was also erected.
*At the time of interview (February 20, 2019), construction work was underway.

④Big Clock Explanation Board

⑤ Bell of Requiem and Hope

⑥You can see Yamada Bay on a clear day

After this, it’s time to start eating snacks.
Goatumaru Suisan is located just after getting down to the foot of Mt. Mt.Mikura. Here, we had a hands-on experience of shucking oysters and making wild squid. Oysters are one of Yamada’s specialties, as evidenced by the oyster farming racks that are a typical sight in Yamada Bay. Open it with a special knife and you’ll find fresh oyster meat! The great thing about this tour is that you can take it as is. Some people even participate with a drink in hand. In addition to fresh raw oysters, you’ll want to drink alcohol when you have delicious squid in front of you. Thank you for the meal!
The types of snacks you can eat will change depending on the season, but you can also try making fried Yamada senbei rice crackers.

⑦If you participate in this tour, you will be able to eat snacks at Goatumaru Suisan.
⑧Oyster shelling experience. Remove the shell with a special knife

⑨It was a struggle, but I managed to open it.
⑩I’m happy to be able to eat freshly peeled food! The meat is large and fresh, and the scent of the sea spreads throughout your mouth.

⑪⑫ Experience eating squid. Put the dried Japanese squid into the rolling machine. When I turned the handle, a fun squid appeared!

⑬ Sobacchi also participated!

⑭ Goatumaru Suisan sells specialty products such as seafood and processed products.
