For about 100 years in the 12th century, Hiraizumi was a place where a peaceful utopia based on Buddhism was built by the three Oshu Fujiwara clans.
The Golden Hall of Chuson-ji Temple, where the bodies of three generations of the Fujiwara clan and the heads of the fourth generation are buried, is Japan’s proud cultural property and has been designated as National Treasure No. 1. In addition, the Jodo Garden of Motsuji Temple, which has been designated as a special historical site and a special place of scenic beauty, and Muryoko-in Temple, which is a special historic site, still convey the image of the Pure Land that the three generations of Fujiwara had hoped for. The mountain range that connects Chusonji and Motsuji is sure to give peace of mind to everyone visiting Hiraizumi. Hiraizumi was also the place where many famous literary figures were drawn, including Hoshi Saigyo, Basho Matsuo, Hakushu Kitahara, Jiro Daibutsu, Kenji Miyazawa, and Kyo Miyoshi.

The 20 members of the “Ancient Capital Hiraizumi Guide Association” are working hard to convey to everyone the charm of the Fujiwara clan’s Buddhist culture, which flourished in the remote areas of Japan in the 12th century.
We will guide you not only to Hiraizumi town, but also to the remains of the Kotodera village manor, the Shiratorate ruins, and the Chojagahara Haiji temple ruins.
