Geibikei Gorge, located in Higashiyama-cho, Ichinoseki City, southern Iwate Prefecture, has been designated as a national scenic spot.
It has also been included in the Mainichi Shimbun’s 100 Scenic Views of Japan, and you can enjoy the four seasons throughout the year: fresh greenery in spring, cool weather in summer, autumn leaves in autumn, and kotatsu boats in winter. Also in the same town, there is “Yugen Cave” where you can enjoy limestone caves, and “Stone and Kenji Museum” is located on the site of the Tohoku Crushed Stone Factory where Kenji Miyazawa worked as an engineer.

This year, 2010, Geibikei will celebrate its 100th anniversary, and Geibi Tourism Center will also celebrate its 40th anniversary. The total length of the valley is about 2 km, and it takes about 90 minutes to take a round trip by boat and walk around. The boatman will sing “Geibi Oiwake” as he guides guests down the boat.
