What started out as a side job for the samurai class during the feudal period, became a full-time job after the Meiji Restoration, and in 1920, it became one of the Hanamaki products, producing about 250,000 bottles a year. Currently, only one company produces them, but they are also popular as decorative items such as mini umbrellas and wall-hanging umbrellas.

Shinobi piece

This simple horse doll made of rice straw is unique to the Hanamaki region. There are many horse-related local toys in Japan, but this is unique to Hanamaki. Legend has it that people made straw horses for love, etc., and delivered them secretly at night to the Kannon Hall of Enmanji Temple, where they were wrapped in yellow or red cloth in gratitude for the fulfillment of their wishes.

Narushima Washi

It is said that the production of washi paper began in Towa Town before the first year of Kanbun, and during the feudal period, it was used as official paper for the Nanbu domain. Until just after the end of the war, several houses in the Narushima area were producing washi paper, but with the spread of mass-produced Western paper, the demand for washi declined, and now it is only produced at the Washi Crafts Museum. Narushima washi paper is made by hand, one by one, using mulberry and mitsumata as raw materials, and is well known as Japan's northernmost washi paper.

Narushima Washi Crafts Museum

The Narushima Washi Crafts Museum is a production base for Narushima Washi, the northernmost Japanese paper in Japan, and a facility for experiencing paper making. Everything about Narushima Washi is concentrated in the museum, and you can experience the culture of Washi that has been handed down since ancient times in Japan. Additionally, during the winter when paper making is in full swing, you can also observe the paper making process.
