Makibori Shrine

Teramachi Street

The street, with its Nambu Ironware street lights, cobblestone-like sidewalks, and temple walls, was selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Roads in 1988. Nearby are Hoonji Temple, known for the 500 Rakans, and Mitsuishi Shrine, which is also a legendary place name in Iwate.

Sakurayama Shrine

It was founded in 1749. The shrine building is located on the site of the Sannomaru ruins of Morioka Castle, and was worshiped as the guardian deity of the Nanbu domain. In 1926, a sword made by Kuninaga in the early Nanbokucho period was donated to Sakurayama Shrine by Nanbu Rijun, and is designated as an important cultural property of the country. The annual festival is held from May 25th to 27th, and includes a parade of warriors and offerings of traditional performing arts.

Hoonji Temple/Gohyaku Rahats

An ancient temple of the Soto sect, the principal image is Shaka Nyorai. The Arhat statue housed in Arhat Hall was created by nine Buddhist sculptors in Kyoto over a period of four years starting in 1731. All are made of marquetry and lacquered, and some of the statues include Marco Polo and Kublai. A cultural property designated by Morioka City.
