Japanese paper mache

Washi paper mache, a traditional Japanese method, is used to create colorful and cute dolls such as the 12 Zodiac series and the ``Shishiodori'', a local performing art from southern Iwate Prefecture. It has been handed down in the Hanamaki region since ancient times as a toy that brings good luck to a wealthy family, and it is also gaining popularity as a Hanamaki souvenir.

Hayachine Shrine

It began with a shrine built on the summit of Mt. Hayachine in 807, and has since become the center of worship for Mt. Hayachine. The building that currently stands in the town's Dake village was built in 1612, and has suffered many fires. Hayachine-Dake Kagura (nationally designated important intangible folk cultural property) has been passed down here as a ritual performing art, and the annual festival is held on August 1st.
