Horai-kyo, located on the east side of Fujishichi Onsen, was formed by lava that rolled out when Hachimantai Volcano erupted, and is littered with huge rocks and strange stones. Over thousands of years, the lava cooled, hemlock moths and fir trees grew thickly, and water collected in the depressions, creating the beautiful Horai Swamp. Old trees that have been transformed by the forces of nature form a forest, and the scenery is particularly magical on foggy days. The approximately 40-minute trekking course is like a natural athletic course, passing through fallen trees. Along the way, there are Horai Swamp with clear water and a forest where the Moria tree frog, a natural monument, spawns.
