It was founded in 1909 as a puppet theater in a converted storehouse, and began screening movies in the Taisho era.
The movie boom was at its peak in the 1950s, and the current building was constructed in 1956.
It is the only active movie theater in Iwate Prefecture that still retains the vestiges of the good old days of the movie boom.
It became a registered tangible cultural property of the country in 2016.
The Cassiopeia Film Festival is held every year with special guests.
