Preventing Bear Attacks on Humans
Most of the forested areas in Iwate Prefecture are bear habitats.
When entering these forests for activities such as mushroom picking or recreation, please be aware that there is always a risk of unexpectedly encountering a bear and suffering an attack. Carefully consider whether to enter the mountains. If you do enter, please observe the following points and take sufficient precautions.
・Given the high risk of bear encounters in forests, carefully reassess the necessity of entering before doing so.
・Check bear sighting and attack reports for the area beforehand; avoid entering regions with confirmed sightings or attacks.
・Travel in groups and avoid entering during dawn or dusk hours.
・Always use noise-making devices like bear bells or radios to alert bears to your presence.
・Turn back immediately if you see bear droppings or tracks.
・Carry deterrent items such as bear repellent spray.
