Doctor of Science and professor at the University of Tokyo from Ninohe. He was the founder of geodesy, earthquakes, and magnetism, and a pioneer of the Roman alphabet and metric system. He discovered the "Z term" with Sakae Kimura in 1901, and became widely known internationally in the fields of geodesy, earthquakes, and magnetism, and has attended 56 international academic conferences. He was the first citizen of Iwate Prefecture to receive the Order of Culture, and has received numerous meritorious awards from various countries.
