Sumi Tsuke Festival

Yahaba Town

Central Iwate

First Saturday of February every year

This festival began about 400 years ago as a festival to pray for protection from fires, safe childbirth, and good health. It is passed down as ``Yaki Kannon New Year's Eve,'' and is also known as ``Seadotaki.'' When the festival begins, people light a pile of cedar branches, dip their hands in charcoal, and rub it on each other's faces as they pray for good health throughout the year.
