Lake Iwado in Yabukawa, the coldest region in Honshu, is crowded with people fishing for smelt every year. Smelt fishing, which involves drilling a hole in the surface of a frozen lake and dropping a fishing line, can be enjoyed by everyone from children to adults, and special drills for drilling holes in the ice and the necessary tools for fishing can be rented at the rest house. The best fishing spots vary depending on the season, with January being near the shore at a depth of 5 to 12 meters, February offshore at a depth of 15 to 20 meters, and March again near the shore. We recommend coating the smelt you catch, frying it in flour, sprinkling it with salt, and eating it on the spot. It is also delicious as tempura or tsukudani. When you catch a lot of fish, you can vacuum pack them at the Iwado Revitalization Center.
