Hirono Town

Sea urchin

Hirono Town, known for its southern sea urchin fishing, boasts one of the largest catches of sea urchin in Iwate Prefecture. The sea urchins are grazed for three to four years by digging trenches (propagation trenches) in the vast rocky areas unique to Hirono Town, feeding on high-quality seaweed and kelp that grow in the clean sea, and are characterized by their sweet, rich flavor.

The “Taneichi Sea Urchin Festival” is held every summer, with activities such as selling sea urchins, experiencing sea urchin shell-breaking, and demonstrations of southern crawling.
