A village in which houses are built in the middle of rice paddies and fields, separated from each other, is called a "scattered settlement. They are said to be the original landscape of the Japanese countryside and can be found only in a few places in Japan today. The scenery is nostalgic, like that in "My Neighbor Totoro.
Access: Get off at Mizusawa Station on the JR Tohoku Main Line, and take the Iwate-ken Kotsu Umatome Line or Hirooka Line bus.
