An Edohigan spreads its branches leisurely against the backdrop of snow-covered Mt. Iwate. The exact age of the tree is unknown, but it was planted about 100 years ago as a shade tree to protect cattle, which don't like the heat, from the strong summer sun when it was used as pasture land. It has become a hot topic for its beautiful scenery, and has been used as a filming location for the movie ``Mibu Gishiden'' and the TV drama series ``Dondo Hare.''
