The area near the summit of Mt. Oritsume has abundant spring water and a Quercus forest, making it one of the largest habitats for fireflies in Japan. In 2018, it was designated as a natural monument by Iwate Prefecture as the "Mt. Orizume firefly habitat."

*Since 2021, traffic restrictions have been implemented for certain periods during the firefly peak season to protect Himefireflies. (About a week from early July) If you wish to view during the traffic restriction period, you will need to make a reservation in advance from the Mt. Orizume Promotion Council website .
