A judoka from Kuji City. A petite person with a height of 159 cm and a weight of 55 kg, he began judo in junior high school, and after graduating, he moved to Tokyo and enrolled at the Kodokan. In 1930, he won the special match at the first All Japan Judo Championships. He studied under Sakujiro Yokoyama's instructor, 8th dan, and was promoted year by year, reaching the highest rank of 7th dan in 1923 and 10th dan in 1945. He devised many new techniques such as the ``air throw'' and became the prefecture's first Person of Cultural Merit in 1961.
