This is one of the places where the original landscape typical of Tono remains. Gongen-sama, enshrined in a thatched-roof shrine nestled in the rice paddies, is also called "Arakami-sama" (rough god) because legend has it that he bit off one of his ears in a fight with Gongen-sama of a neighboring district.
The shrine is also called "Arakami-sama" (meaning "rough god"). The shrine is a soothing place to visit throughout the four seasons, with its reflection in the rice paddies in spring, green rice fields in summer, golden rice ears in autumn, and pure white snow in winter.
