Attention Michinoku Coastal Trail Visitors Safety Alert: Bear Attack

At approximately 7:00 a.m. on July 27, 2026, a hiker was injured in a bear attack in Noda Village, Iwate Prefecture.
Bears inhabit the forests and wild areas of Iwate Prefecture. Please be extremely cautious of encounters with wild animals on the Michinoku Coastal Trail.

Take the following precautions:
・Avoid going out alone whenever possible.
・If you must hike alone, hire a guide who is familiar with the local environment and trail conditions.
・Be especially careful when hiking in the early morning or evening.
・Carry a bear bell or similar device, and periodically blow a whistle or make other noise while walking to let bears know that a person is present.

If you notice a bear nearby:
・Stay calm and slowly move away.
・Do not turn your back on the bear. Keep your eyes on it and slowly back away.
・Sudden, panicked movements can startle the bear and provoke an attack, so remain calm. Wait until the bear has left before moving away from the area.
・If you are suddenly attacked, protect your face, head and neck with your arms or backpack to prevent serious injury.
