To All Users of the Michinoku Coastal Trail Safety Alert Following a Bear Attack

At approximately 7:00 a.m. on July 27, 2026, a bear attack occurred in Noda Village, Iwate Prefecture.
Bears inhabit the forests and natural areas of Iwate Prefecture. When using the trail, please be extremely cautious of encounters with wildlife and take the following precautions:

・Avoid hiking alone whenever possible.
・If you must hike alone, hiring a guide who is familiar with the local natural environment and trail conditions is an effective way to ensure your safety.
・Please exercise particular caution when hiking in the early morning or evening.
・Carry a bear bell or similar device, and make noise while walking or blow a whistle periodically to let the bear know that a person is present.

If you notice a bear nearby, please take the following precautions:
・Stay calm and slowly move away from the area.
・Do not turn your back on the bear; keep your eyes on it and slowly back away.
・Sudden movements by a panicked person can startle a bear and provoke an attack, so remain calm and do not panic; wait until the bear has left before moving away from the area.
・If you are suddenly attacked, assume a defensive posture by using both arms or your backpack to protect your face, neck, and head to prevent serious injury.
