Nitobe Inazo Monument

The monument, ``Wish Fulfilled, Bridge of the Pacific,'' erected in Morioka Castle Ruins Park, a place of relaxation for citizens, belongs to Inazo Nitobe, who was born in Morioka and later served as deputy secretary-general of the League of Nations. When Nitobe was asked by a professor what his purpose was to study English literature, he answered, ``If I were allowed to do so, I would like to be a bridge across the Pacific Ocean.'' "I want to serve as a government official. That's why I need to be fluent in English," he is said to have replied.

Sakurayama Shrine

It was founded in 1749. The main shrine building is located on the ruins of Sannomaru of Morioka Castle, and was worshiped as the guardian deity of the Nanbu domain. In 1926, a sword made by Kuninaga in the early Nanbokucho period was donated to Sakurayama Shrine by Nanbu Rijun. This is designated as a national important cultural property. The annual festival is held from May 25th to 27th, and includes a parade of warriors and offerings of traditional performing arts.

Iwate Prefectural Public Hall

It was built in 1927 (Showa 2) to commemorate the marriage of Emperor Showa. At that time, the modern structure with its exterior decorated with brick attracted attention in Tohoku, and even in today's government district, which is lined with modern buildings, it still catches the eye.
