Roadside station “Kukai Kogen”

Heading east on National Route 106 from Morioka City and passing through the tunnel of the mountain pass, you will reach Kukai Kogen. From the roadside station ``Kukai Kogen'', you can see Mt. Kabuto Myojin, making it the perfect place to take a break from your drive. It is fully equipped with features such as dining at a restaurant with an extensive menu, a souvenir shop stocking not only local specialties but also products from nearby areas, and an information center where you can purchase tourist information.

Hei River Mountain Stream

The Hei River, which originates from Mt. Kabuto Myojin on the Kukai Highlands, is the largest river in the prefecture that collects large and small rivers and flows into Miyako Bay, and is a treasure trove of river fish such as sweetfish, char, and yamame trout. As a mecca for mountain stream fishing, it is crowded with Taikobo from early spring. There are parts of the old national highway that are now used as nature trails, and many people visit during the season of fresh greenery and autumn leaves to enjoy the scenery that spreads out before their eyes. In particular, Otoge Dam is visited by enthusiasts who want to take photos of the autumn leaves, the dam, and trains. [Best time to see autumn leaves] Late October to early November

Sano Rock (prefecturally designated natural monument)

Sano-iwa, which appears to rise from the sea, is made up of three gigantic rocks: the drum-shaped Taiko-iwa, the 50m-high Otoko-iwa, and the Onna-iwa nearby. There is a sea cave in Otokowa, and it is said that passing through it will bring you good luck. The rock has layers of Cretaceous conglomerate and sandstone. There is a promenade nearby, and you can also do sea fishing. The further down the promenade you go, the closer you will see the brave rock formations. Dynamic rock fishing can be enjoyed all along the coast from Taro Port to Masaki and Myojinzaki. You can catch greenling, sea bass, donko, perch, mackerel, etc. The season is from May to December.
