Ofunato City Museum

Ofunato City is a treasure trove of geological materials, including the Silurian strata of the Paleozoic era, which is said to be the "foundation stone of Japan." In addition to learning about Ofunato's sea and nature in the theater, the geology exhibition room, archeology and folklore exhibition room, etc. introduce the current state of Ofunato.

Three-faced camellia

This giant camellia tree is located in the grounds of Kumano Shrine in Suesaki Town.It is 17 meters tall, 8 meters in circumference at the base, and is the largest and oldest tree in Japan, approximately 1,400 years old. At that time, there were camellias on the east, south, and west sides of the shrine, which is why it got its name, but now only the east side remains and is designated as a natural monument by the prefecture.

Choanji Temple

A temple of the Otani sect of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism that was built approximately 900 years ago in the city. It is one of the most famous temples in Tohoku and is a branch temple of Higashi Honganji in Kyoto. The original building was destroyed by fire, and the current one was later rebuilt. Among them, the Sanmon gate is approximately 20 meters high and is made entirely of zelkova, and the Taiko-do hall was built approximately 270 years ago in the style of Momoyama architecture.
