Pickles Gakkura no Sato

This pickled radish is called ``Gakkurazuke'' because of the way it is cut off with a machete. These handmade pickles are painstakingly made by local mothers using Japanese radish grown in Kawai, Miyako City. There are normal types that bring out the flavors of kimchi, shiso plum vinegar, and sukikonbu.

This healthy drink is made by blending the extract of black flat beans (gankui beans), a specialty of the Kawai region of Miyako City, with pure honey harvested at the foot of Mt. Hayachine. Black beans contain a lot of saponin and iron, and saponin in particular is said to be good for the throat and has been used for a long time.
