Mt. Kurikoma
Mt. Kurikoma, the main peak of Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, is a mountain with an altitude of 1,626m, also called Mt. Sugawa in Iwate Prefecture. Climbing courses lead from Iwate, Akita, and Miyagi prefectures, and the Iwate side climbs from the Sugawa Onsen trailhead. You can enjoy climbing through the remaining snow during the opening of the mountain in mid-May, beautiful alpine plants from June to July, and autumn leaves from the end of September that make the mountain look like it's on fire. You can enjoy all four seasons until the mountain closes in November. There are no difficult spots on the climbing course, so even middle-aged and elderly people can climb with confidence. It takes about 2 hours from the Sugawa Onsen trailhead to the top. [Best time to see autumn leaves] Late September to mid-October *Mid-November to early May (National Route 342 is closed in winter) *Parts of the Kurikomayama Sugawa Course are prohibited from entering.
