*Preservation and repair work began in June, 2008.
For a while, the Important Cultural Property Chiba Family Residence ("Nanbu Kyokuriya Chiba Family") will not be open to the public due to conservation and repair work.
For details, see ⇒ [ Tono City Website ]

Built about 200 years ago, the house has a living area of 122 tsubos and a barn area of about 41 tsubos. It is said that there used to be 15 farm boys and 20 horses, and that all the fields within sight looking down were owned by the Chiba family, the owners of this house.
The natural topography of the land was used to build stone walls, giving the house a castle-like appearance.
Together with Hida's gassho-zukuri style, it is one of the ten most famous minka in Japan.
