Kenji’s Square

Come to the plaza

This information dissemination base was named after the Morioka dialect for ``Please come.'' In addition to the `` Tourism and Culture Information Plaza '' on the second floor, there is also a shop selling specialty products and a light snack cafe. In addition, the `` Morioka Tegami Museum '' on the 6th floor stores and exhibits letters and diaries of great people connected to Morioka.

Genbikei

Kurikoma, is a scenic beauty and a natural monument. Iwai River, which flows from its source at Mt. Kurikoma, erodes huge rocks, creating a 2-km-long gorge with a variety of expressions such as a hole, a waterfall, and an abyss. Walking along the promenade, visitors can see from the suspension bridge the contrasting views of the wild upstream flow and the gentle downstream abyss. In spring, visitors can enjoy the beauty of the valley with cherry blossoms in full bloom and melting snow, in summer they can listen to the cool murmur of the mountain stream, in autumn they can see the changing colors of the mountains, and in winter the scenery is reminiscent of an ink painting. The famous "kakko dango" are sold at a store on the other side of the river, where you place your order and payment in a basket lowered by a rope stretched over the river, and then ring a wooden mallet.

Hachimantai Mountaintop Rest House

A relaxing space on the summit of Hachimantai. On the 1st floor above ground and the 2nd basement floor, there are rest corners offering meals and local products to soothe the fatigue of sightseeing. Also, the natural environment information corner is full of information about Hachimantai. It provides information on alpine plants and hot springs.

Mitsuharasha

Kogensha is the publisher of Kenji Miyazawa's collection of children's stories, ``Restaurant with Many Orders,'' published before his death. Although it is considered one of the greatest masterpieces of Japanese fairy tale literature, it was not talked about at the time and hardly sold. In the courtyard facing the Kitakami River, there is a monument marking the place where the book was published, a stone pillar carved with part of the fairy tale ``The Crow's Big Dipper,'' and there is also a museum exhibiting Kenji's handwritten manuscripts. In addition, at the ``Kakaikan'' coffee room, which has a pleasant atmosphere decorated with stained glass, you can enjoy hand-brewed coffee and the famous ``walnut cookies.''

Tendai Sect Myokenyama Kuroishi Temple

It is said to have been founded by Bodhisattva Gyoki in the first year of the Tenpyo Period (729) of the Nara Era and was called Tokozan Yakushiji Temple, but was destroyed by fire. Later, in 849, Jikaku Daishi restored the temple, which is an old temple of the Tendai sect of Buddhism. The main statue of Yakushi Nyorai (seated Yakushi Nyorai), designated as a National Important Cultural Property, is Japan's only Jokan-inscribed Buddha, inscribed in the 4th year of Jokan. From the night of the seventh day of the seventh lunar month to the next morning, the "Kuroishiji So-min Festival," a festival of naked men and flames, is held to pray for the exorcism of bad luck and a good harvest. (The Kuroishi Temple Sunmin Festival has not been held since 2025.)

Geibikei Gorge

One of Japan's top 100 views. It is an approximately 2 km long gorge created by the Satetsu River eroding limestone, with approximately 100 m cliffs rising on both banks. The current is calm, and you can hear the boatman's song ``Geibi Oiwake'' as you go down the boat.
